The Rented RV

Occasionally my husband suggests getting a RV and taking road trips around the country. He tries to sweeten the pot by saying we can bring the pets.  BeBe would love it, the Wonder Dog is 100% a home body, his life begins and ends on our ranch.

Ken thinks I have forgotten the first time he talked me into an RV trip, but I remember…it was 1980 something…

Our daughters were teenagers, a family trip would make so many wonderful memories, memories that would last a lifetime.  And … those memories really have lasted a lifetime!!

The week we picked turned out to be a week that I was unfortunately PMS-ing.  Our family was traveling in a small rented house with wheels, two teens that may or may not have wanted to leave their friends, and a mother with raging hormones.

The first issue: Our first lunch was bologna sandwiches at an itsy-bitsy, non-scenic roadside park, it was then that I realized we couldn’t just drive that big rig through a fast food place. Except for Ken grilling meat, I was going to be in charge of all the food and snacks. Wait a minute…this doesn’t seem much like a vacation, for me,  I didn’t like cooking at home.

The second issue: At every stop, the boys in the campground surrounded the RV, like they had intel that pretty girls were coming. My husband went into protective dad mode, made the girls wear t-shirts on top of their swimsuits, would not let them go to a dance at the park, watched them like a hawk, but was unsuccessful at running off the boys. This obviously made the girls mad, which meant their attitudes were miserable, which triggered my PMS into the danger zone. Fun is not a word I can use to describe what it is like to be on “vacation” with two angry teens in a rectangular box.

Long story longer, after the lengthy road trip, we had to immediately clean “house” and return the rented RV. I was ready to just be in my real house and order some food, cooked by someone else, delivered to my door. Adding up the cost of the RV rental, the food, the fee for RV parks and the fuel, we could have had a lovely vacation, stayed in a hotel, had every meal in a restaurant or even flown to a destination!!

It was a miracle that I didn’t go completely berserk, I admit, I did go a little berserk.  I am claustrophobic, which was exacerbated by the layout of the RV.

I was so glad we rented the RV instead of buying and we NEVER went RV’ing again, and never will!
