My Grandmother’s Ring

When I was 50ish, my Dad decided I was mature enough to have my beloved Grandmother’s diamond ring.  The ring had been kept in a dark, safety deposit box for many decades.  Dad moved it to his home-safe when she passed away.  I had never seen the ring. She never wore it, she kept it safe, instead of enjoying its beauty.

My grandmother was petite and so was the ring, of course, it didn’t fit my finger.  The platinum ring was sized, and enhanced with a gold jacket, the jeweler was careful not to destroy the original design, it was the perfect fusion of our two generations and personalities. I was determined the ring would finally be worn and appreciated.  For 14 years my precious grandmother was remembered, every time I put on the ring.

Seemingly overnight, the knuckle of my ring finger, on my right hand swelled from a size 7 to a size 10.  Arthritis was the cause, this type swelling is called “sausage finger”, such a funny name.  Thankfully, I got the ring off, but could no longer wear the ring.  I wasn’t sure if this single, fat finger was permanent or temporary, so I decided not to have the ring re-sized.  The ring was again exiled to a safe, I held out hope for a quick healing.

Every few months, I would try on the ring, year after year after year, the ring wouldn’t get past my knuckle.  I decided if I couldn’t wear the ring by the end of the fifth year, it was time to have it re-sized.  Miracles come in all sizes and shapes, the prayers for my finger seemed like a vanity prayer, but I held on to my mustard-seed of faith, after each disappointing try. On October 2, 2022, three months before the five-year resizing deadline, I was prompted by the Holy Ghost to try on the ring again, it was late, it was time for bed, I was tired, but I pulled the ring out of the darkness of the safe, looked at it, and again remembered how much I loved my grandmother… this time, Glory to God, it fit over my knuckle!! It finally fit!!
Tears of joy, gratitude, and faith welled up inside me! God had heard my prayers, that night I experienced a miracle.

I believe in miracles. I believe in trusting God’s perfect timing!! I believe God hears our prayers!
