Curling Irons

Not wanting to be late (again) for our monthly lunch date with friends, I was hurried to get out the door.

About a mile from our house, the accuser of the brethren whispered in my ear, “You didn’t unplug your curling irons, the house is going to burn down”.

I started replaying my morning routine … had I forgotten in my haste??  I told my husband about the thoughts rolling around in my head, hoping that by giving them oxygen,  the battle in my mind would end. Nope!

I started thinking about the stuff I would miss inside the house, stuff that couldn’t be replaced. I was glad the dogs were outside and that I hadn’t left them without a way to escape the impending inferno.  I was wondering if the fire department would have to break down the electronic front gate to get to the house. I was wondering if we would buy a travel trailer to live in during reconstruction, or maybe get a tiny house as a temporary house and a future guest house.  I was wondering if we would build a barndominium or a brick home out of the ashes that my carelessness caused. The battle in my mind was raging!!

I started wondering why there aren’t houses burning to the ground all the time, caused from ironing clothes, and leaving on hair and kitchen appliances.

By the time we made it to Huntsville, it dawned on me that I had wasted over an hour playing “worse case” scenarios in my mind.

This isn’t the first time, I have fought this battle in my mind.  I am a double checker, it is rare that I forget to unplug things.

It was time to give it to God, enjoy the fun plans of the day and stop torturing myself.

When I finally let it go, I was mad that the devil had an opportunity to steal my joy, and had planned to steal joy the entire day.  The joy of the Lord is our strength!

After Huntsville, I didn’t think of it again (much), we had a wonderful lunch in The Woodlands, made a few retail stops and arrived to a safe and secure home, with happy dogs welcoming our arrival.

The curling irons were unplugged and stored away in the vanity drawer.  The devil is such a liar!!

I keep learning the same lessons, thankfully I am learning faster …

2 Corinthians 10:5  … and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
